About the Author

DAVID AUNE is Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at the University of Notre Dame. He holds an M.A. from Wheaton Graduate School of Theology, an M.A. from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Among his publications are The New Testament in its Literary Environment and Greco-Roman Literature and the New Testament (editor).

The standard for professional scholars.

I certainly agree with points made by one reviewer who described these volumes as encyclopaedic "database for specialists", but that is inconsistant with his being doubtful of the usefulness of some sections and their level of detail. He may never had to write an exegesis paper for a graduate level course on a biblical subject. Of course, I am giving away my point of view. That said, I would NEVER recommend this book, or any one of its volumes to the casual reader who wanted to know something about Revelation. I would not even recommend the Word series for pastors. For that, there are lots of really good books, such as Ben Witherington's social commmentary or Elizabeth Schussler Fiorenza's feminist leaning commentary, or best of all, Bruce Metzger's "Breaking the Code".

The Word series is for professors who teach in seminaries, and who deal with deep textual and translational problems. This is especially true of Aune's three volumes.That is as long as Nolland's 3 volumes on the Gospel of Luke, which is longer book in the Bible. Part of this may be due to the fact that Revelation may be the most poorly written book in the Greek New Testament. Even as late as Erasmus' 1516 edition of the Greek NT, we did not have good sources for the whole book. Erasmus filled in the gaps by back translating parts from St. Jerome's Latin translation. (These missing Greek pieces have since been found. Jerome did NOT make those parts up.)

I have used several different works in the Word commentary series, alway with some other commentary open at the same time. Almost invariably, the Word contribution is more even handed, more thorough, and more accurate in avoiding far fetched theories about the text. Aune, however, does stray from this standard in a big way with his theory, ably described in Mr. Garrow's review. I will also agree with Mr. Garrow's review of the first volume, and his source, Dr. Richard Bauckham, that unlike the Gospel of John, for example, Revelation is probably the result of a single hand, maybe not all in one sitting, but that would help to explain the atrocious Greek.

Reading Word commentaries can be a bit tedious, but if you are looking for information on an especially detailed matter in the text, this is the place to come. I think library search software may someday replace the Word series, but that time has not yet come.

This is such a welcome addition to commentaries on the book of Revelation

Aune has hit a home run with his commentary on Revelation 6-16 in the Word Biblical Commentary series. Exhaustive in treatment of words, excellent in comparison of their use within Revelation, and extensive in offering alternate meanings with their sources, this book is a must for anyone seeking to update their collection of reference books on this last and controversial book of the New Testament.

Wisdom

Every time I stumble as a manager, or hit a rough patch with people in general, I turn to Jerry's wisdom. For 18 years now, he's given me perspective, he's given me ideas, touchstones I can fall back on in a difficult situation. And here I go again, dipping back into the font before facing another hard problem.

I used to worry that the "hard parts" of management never seemed to go away. But these last couple of years, I've noticed that my "hard parts" really are getting harder and harder. I've grown in skill, what used to be hard is now, if not exactly pleasant, at least doable. Jerry's teachings are a large part of that. Now I'm trying to coach others, and I feel like a beginner again. This book helps, whether I reread it myself or gift it to others to read.

Spiritual Metaphysics with a Southern Baptist Flavor!

As a lover of teachers who try to open the minds of people to the reality of Oneness, I am now a big fan of Reverend Frederick Eikerenkoetter - better known as Reverend Ike. The best description I can give of this book would be "New Thought with Soul!" Rev Ike interprets the Bible esoterically rather than literally. This book is a fun-to-read spiritual study guide with 52 subjects that each have a separate chapter. Each chapter ends with a spiritual mind treatment and review questions. A few of the chapter titles are:
* Create Your Own Garden of Eden
* Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up?
* You are what you feed your mind?
* Are You Ready for What You Want?
* The Treasure of God-In-You.
In addition to here on Amazon, you can also purchase the book from his website. I found it cheaper there.

An eye-opening, life-changing book!

I've had this book for years. I'm not a religious person, but I am spiritual and I believe in the power of the mind and the power of my thoughts. That is what Rev. Ike teaches in this book. And believing in oneself and loving oneself because God is in You! It's so easy to read and to re-read. Each of the 52 chapters is self-contained and contains eye-opening teaching and affirmations that you can put to use right away. This book will change the way you look at life! A change for the better!. Also, for those who don't already know -- there are many wonderful Rev. Ike videos on YouTube. Just go to YouTube and search for Rev. Ike.

Grade 9 Up-Reeves competently describes the changes that have occurred in the United States over the last century as our country has grown from a brash newcomer among the older European nations into the lone superpower and global economic dynamo that we are today. All of the major issues and events are touched upon in this clearly written, though somewhat bland recital. The text is arranged in short chronological chapters and is accompanied by a sprinkling of black-and-white photos. There is thorough coverage and thoughtful analysis of each presidency from Theodore Roosevelt to Bill Clinton. The changing roles of women, the recognition of the civil rights of African Americans, and the gradual improvements in their standard of living and access to higher education are adequately covered. The sexual revolution and other counterculture influences of the '60s and '70s are duly noted. "Monicagate" and the impeachment of Bill Clinton receive a brief, but clear explanation as well. The U.S. intervention in Kosovo and the bombing of Yugoslavia conclude the volume. A short, helpful list of suggested readings follows each chapter. Students should find this a useful no-frills introduction to the topic, adequate for an introductory course or quick reference. Harold Evans's much larger and more attractively packaged The American Century (Knopf, 1998) provides similar coverage with a multitude of fascinating photos and an extensive bibliography, but its size makes it more suitable for reference.

Reeves (Univ. of Wisconsin, Parkside) has designed this book as a succinct review of recent American history. Aimed at general readers and undergraduates, it provides reliable history without excessive detail and conflicting viewpoints. Moving from 1900 through recent events in Kosovo, Reeves writes the American story engagingly and without much ideological interpretation. The only weakness here (not a major one) is a lack of coverage of popular culture. Mostly, however, this is an admirable, well-written success that readers interested in American history will appreciate. From the author of The Empty Church (1996) comes another ideology-saturated piece of propaganda masquerading as history. Twentieth-Century America claims to be a college textbook, but it is really a lament about the crumbling of traditional values. In a chapter called The Best Years, Reeves declares that to a great many Americans who lived through them, the years 1953 to 1963 were an especially pleasant time in this countrys history. Before we can suggest that Betty Friedan (not to mention Rosa Parks) might take issue with his description of life under Eisenhower, Reeves quotes a 1995 journalists assertion that elderly women who were young mothers in the suburbs during the `50s would tell you those were the best years they can remember. His portrait of the centurys close is revealing: He crows about the collapse of welfare as we know it, and wonders where have all the morals gone. Reeves relies entirely on the work of William Raspberry and Stephan and Abigail Thernstrom when discussing African-Americans in the `90s, and he is more concerned with black participation in the sports stadium than in the voting booth (the large photograph of Michael Jordan will tell you youre on the right page). The erosion of Christendom is a favorite theme, and in the final chapter Reeves proclaims that the courts, in the name of the separation of church and state, were a major force in restricting the impact of the Christian faith. Among other things, they outlawed prayer in the public schools and drove Christian symbols out of public places. The highly influential New York Times and the American Civil Liberties Union, among others, applauded these rulings. Somehow, Reeves neglects to mention that the NYTs and the ACLUs applause was part of an international Jewish plot. Brief History

I was unsure I could get much from such a brief history of 20th century America. It was exceedingly comprehensive and hit upon the key events of the century. The book was not a complicated read so those without a large American History background would find it interesting and well paced.

Solid History Solidly Told

The first thing I wanted to know, after reading this fine book, was who in the hell reviewed it for Kirkus and how often do they let him out of the state hospital to rant and rave like that. The hatchet job done by the Kirkus review of Reeves fine study seems unethical and self-indulgent. Somebody remind that writer that the 60s are over. Reeves' view of the 50s is hardly unconventional. As for Rosa Parks, in the 50s she felt confident enough to stay in her seat on that Birmingham Bus and the boycott ended in integration of the bus system. Brown vs. Board of Education was in the 50s, a polio cure was found, and on and on. This is a noteworthy and highly readable and provocative book.

i needed the book for a project and it really helped me for that particular reason. the content was full of interesting and helpful facts pertaining to the history of the united states. i was looking for a book of this exact format, one that was not too long but still held all the important information i sought out. i was looking for a book that would still leave me time for everything else in my busy schedule, yet still provide me with all the great info. i am definatly not a college student, which is for whom the book was made. but i found that it still helped me out quite a bit. so if u have a project or if you just plain are interested in learning the history of your country, i would reccomend this book. Reeves is a great author for a younger people as well.

About the Author
Danny Wedding earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1979 and completed a post-doctoral year of training in behavioral medicine and clinical neuropsychology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Wedding directed the neuropsychology services at the medical schools of East Tennessee State University and Marshall University before serving as a legislative aid to Senator Tom Daschle and Congressman John Conyers. Since 1991, Dr. Wedding has served as a Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Missouri Institute of Mental Health, a health policy, research, and training center affiliated with the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. He is the author or editor of 12 books including "Current Psychotherapies", "Movies and Mental Illness", and "Behavior and Medicine". He is the current editor of "PsycCRITIQUES: Contemporary Psychology - APA Review of Books".

This book has it all!

Although it is intended for medical students, this comprehensive book would be useful to a wide variety of readers. I am a psychologist and teach medical residents, and I think this book is a marvelous review of (as its title says) Behavior and Medicine. It's excellent for students because it includes sample Board exam questions, but it's excellent for more advanced professionals because it reviews the basics and provides good ideas for further reading. Phenomenal illustrations also. Often edited books are uneven in their coverage, but this one has overcome that problem. A gem!

Good, but...

Overall, this book is an enjoyable read. The information in it is useful for helping learn how to conduct a patient encounter and how to look at patients as a whole (applying the biopsychosocial model) as opposed to a single set of symptoms or a disease. For its reminder that medicine is not purely science and that the humanities are essential to making a good physician, this book deserves a lot of credit and praise.

Nevertheless, the glaringly awful typos found in every single chapter make me question whether this book had an editor or proofreader before it was put to press. I downgraded the book from 4 to 3 stars because of the haphazard presentation.

Again, a good read (and even better if you're not grammar-obsessed like I am). :)

Valuable book, but...

I purchased this book for a clinical course. The content of the book is actually pretty engaging and relevant for clinicians who truly value the WHOLE patient. The only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars are:

1. The pages easily come out of the spine. This is the only textbook that I've had this issue with to this degree. Perhaps I just got a dud copy, or else the publisher needs to find a new printing company.

2. There's no online version available. Most textbooks now come with login codes to read the text online. The value of this text would be greater if buyers had that option.
