Under the aegis of the late Jim Henson, here are nine stories that first appeared as The Storyteller TV series--traditional folk and fairy tales refreshed for a modern audience. Released now as an adult book, this appealing, abundantly illustrated offering is just as suitable for young readers. Minghella looks to a Tuscan proverb (``The tale is not beautiful if nothing is added to it'') for inspiration and, like Italo Calvino in Italian Folktales, adds to and alters the stories, most already available in standard collections--``Hans My Hedgehog'' and ``The Luck Child,'' for example. Some of his variations lack resonance on paper (the troll in ``The True Bride'' speaks in scrambled phrases like ``I'm founded dumb'') and distract from the prime-time themes of fear, trust, fidelity, etc. Most, however, are interesting even when they deviate from the classic story line (Hans has soft bristles and a devoted mother) and often enough Minghella's own language sets the tone: ``in a week with two Fridays,'' he writes, or ``Suddenly everyone could live forever'' or ``Beggars are never what they seem.'' Darcy May's 41 full-color paintings, rendered in a subtle palette, are elegant, expressive compositions faithful to the spirit of the stories and kin to several old favorites. Image for image, they don't quite match the spiritual quality and inner flow of, say, Nonny Hogrogian's (juvenile) The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs, and they lack the penetrating aspect of the (much longer) Segal/Sendak collaboration The Juniper Tree. So *that's* what the Griffin was saying!

Just so you know, all 9 episodes of The Storyteller are now out on a single DVD - something many of us have been waiting for for years. This book is, I think, the original screenplay of Jim Henson's Storyteller series because it follows *very* closely to the stories and dialogue seen on TV. The illustrations are also taken from the show and are very nice. The written word is different from television, however, and these stories take on a different light often in one versus the other, and there are some expansions here that didn't make the final editing cuts.
My kid and I love "The Storyteller" series, and this book is a pleasant addition for bedtime reading.

Almost Perfection

Perfection is the TV series that preceded this book. Of course, I must gloat and say that I knew all those many years ago that Anthony Minghella was the most exquisite writer I had ever heard/read. His words coupled with the genius of Jim Henson and company made for the best (no exaggeration) thing ever to be broadcast on television. To be able to read the words from these shows and have them readily available on your bookshelf is heaven. I've been recommending the TV series and this book for years. I still recommend it today.

One of the best pieces of magic ever written

Many years ago my family sat around the television, wide eyed and filled with magic; we were watching the Jim Henson Storyteller series. We waited and waited for it to reappear one day- to no avail. But FINALLY, a book! To be able to relive the "hugs and snoodles" of Hans My Hedghog, the stone soup tale of a "Story Short"- all of it beautifully, and creatively written, with illustrations to match- will take you back to your childhood. I find it hard to believe this has yet to be discovered. Don't miss the videos that are now out, at long last!

Matthew Dickerson, professor and member of the environmental studies program at Middlebury College, is the author or coauthor of several books, including Following Gandalf: Epic Battles and Moral Victory in the Lord of the Rings and From Homer to Harry Potter: A Handbook on Myth and Fantasy.

Jonathan Evans, associate professor of English and director of the medieval studies program at the University of Georgia, is a member of the Environmental Ethics Certificate Program faculty. Reading Tolkien through green-colored glasses

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings had such a profound impact on me when I first read them many years ago, that I've spent a lot of time since then trying to figure out why. The answer to that question is always evolving; each re-reading, as the saying goes, teaches me something new about myself.

Tolkien's world is so rich that, as your own interests shift and grow, they are reflected in Middle Earth when next you return.

Lately I've been devoted to understanding climate change and meeting the challenge of putting Earth back on a course towards sustainability, so I was delighted to come across a book that explores the environmental themes in Tolkien's works.

"Ents, Elves and Eriador, The Environmental Vision of J.R.R. Tolkien" is a great read. It's part of a series called "Culture of the Land." Through this book, I returned to Middle Earth to see how those who cared for it most chose to treat it.

The Shire-folk held gardeners and farmers in high esteem; practical cultivation of the land was the rule there. A hobbit enjoyed a view of a well-tended field-- but largely in anticipation of the meals it could provide.

Elves appreciated the aesthetics of their well-ordered landscapes, as in the slow passing of the seasons in the cloistered woods of Lothlorien, but they didn't seem to worry much about growing food.

Ents appreciated wild nature for its own sake- and worked to keep it that way.

Whether Tolkien intended it or not (and there is reason to believe that he did), each culture serves to illustrate a different approach towards stewardship of the Earth. Conservation, preservation and protection are all needed in varying contexts and to varying degrees. Differences in approach sometimes divide people who share a desire to sustain the Earth and civilization. Working out these differences is the great task of "the Fourth Age," a Tolkienesque term for modern times; knowing this sheds new light on some of the themes in the stories from the Third.

Tolkien's ambivalence about unbridled technology is suggested by the hobbits' lack of appreciation for anything more complicated than a water mill. We're in a time when understanding what constitutes appropriate technology in our quest for survival is key. Understanding what we value in nature, and why, is as important. We may soon be in a position to choose what to save, if we can save ourselves. The authors do a wonderful job of pointing this out.

Fascinating read

Ents, Elves and Eriador is a fascinating book. Dickerson and Evans take the reader through Tolkien's work detailing the beloved author's environmental vision. While even a casual reader of Tolkien's writing will recognize that industrialization accompanied evil in his books, this book reveals the depth of his positive vision of the way Middle Earth works. They discuss the various ecologies that make an appearance in Tolkien's work.

The authors:

* write not only about the ecologies themselves, but how Middle Earth becomes a character in the stories.
* also talk about how the people in the stories care (or not) for the environment around them.
* about how the Hobbits create a sustainable community in the Shire, growing food to feed themselves without damaging the soil.
* comment on how things go wrong when one person starts "owning more than is good for them"
* also talk about the role of elves in creating beauty in the world,
* Finally talk about Ent's preservation of the forest of Fangorn.

The works of Sauron are toxic and destructive of the efforts of all people who care for the world they live in. The authors draw parallels between unbridled corporate profits and kind of damage Sauron does to Middle Earth. They show how the poisoning of the earth around both Mordor and Isengard is all too similar to the damage done by industry.

Reading a non-fiction book about Tolkien's environmental vision may seem like a way to spoil the sheer fun of reading The Lord of the Rings and his other books. What I found as I read this book was that I wanted to reread every word of Tolkien to see for myself what the authors have given a glimpse of.

This book if for everyone who loves the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, and who loves the world around them.

A literary masterpiece! If you are a fan of pomegranates and leather this book is for you. Offers deep insights into the lives of salesmen who ply their trade in the hot and saucy pots and pans industry. Belinda, as a new world wide sales director for a pots and pans company, has many experiences such as: The thorough interview process involved in sales, a Belgian department store magnate gives a good "tip" to securing business relationships "deep" within the "hedges" and among the benches of a maze, and a revealing look at Belinda's coercive sales tactics.

Makes for a great podcast

Came across this treasure in the podcast "My Dad Wrote a Porno." This is not exactly the genre I favor, but the podcast had me rolling in laughter, so I wanted to support the author. I highly recommend it. Excellent work Mr. Flintstone!

You owe it to yourself to read this riveting (pun intended - sorry, you have to read the book) account of one woman's adventures in the pots and pans industry (which we all know is the sexiest of industries). Part erotic adventure, part business primer and part (wildly inaccurate) anatomy lesson, this book has it all.

Great Introduction to Using Keras

That having been said, this book is a great introduction to coding up deep learning algorithms in Keras. It shows you how to install Theano or TensorFlow as your backend. The book covers a basic MNIST intro, then goes into Conv-nets, word embeddings, GANs, RNNs, and more. The end of the book even touches upon some reinforcement learning techniques.

There are sufficient citations and followups for each chapter and the authors also show the detailed code and expected outputs.

The reader should already have some experience with python and a basic understanding of neural networks.

One whole area that was not mentioned very much in the first book was the synthesis of elements beyond element 92.� There is an entire chapter devoted to this topic in my VSI on the periodic table.� There is also an extended discussion of alternative forms of the periodic table, from a scientific and philosophical point of view.

A Very Fine Book About an Extremely Profound Idea

Dr. Scerri's book is, to a great extent, about what most of us glossed over when we studied Chemistry in college.

I read the introductory portions of chapters in Chemistry books that covered the history and philosophy pertaining to what the chapter was about when I studied Chemistry in college but I only read those portions once. I read the parts of the chapters that were being tested on over and over again of course.

Now that I'm not striving for good grades in Chemistry the history and philosophy of the periodic table is something I find to be profound, true, and beautiful.

This Short Introduction is a beautifully written book that explains how and why the periodic table was discovered. The discovery process turns out to be a good read. I can't get over the fact that Mendeleev, the Russian genius who was most instrumental in discovering the periodic table, didn't believe in the existence of atoms!!

My only warning involves the need to have studied a bit of Chemistry to understand the book. I'm fairly certain that rudimentary knowledge of Chemistry is assumed as the basis for the book.

After evolving for nearly 150 years through the work of numerous individuals, the periodic table remains at the heart of the study of chemistry.

This is mainly because it is of immense practical benefit for making predictions about all manner of chemical and physical properties of the elements and possibilities for bond formation.

Instead of having to learn the properties of the 100 or more elements, the modern chemist, or the student of chemistry, can make effective predictions from knowing the properties of typical members of each of the eight main groups [or columns of elements] and those of the transition metals and rare earth elements [all found neatly arranged on the periodic table]."

The above extract comes from this slim book by Dr. Eric Scerri. Scerri is a chemist and a leading science philosopher specializing in the history and philosophy of the periodic table. He is presently a lecturer with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCLA. (He's also a musician who plays one mean electric guitar as well as the acoustic piano.)

This book is part of the "Very Short Introductions" series (which began in 1995) that are books for anyone wanting a "stimulating and accessible way in to a new subject."

A modern definition of the periodic table might be an arrangement of the chemical elements according to their atomic numbers (the number of protons in the nucleus of an element's atom) to exhibit the periodic law (principle that the properties of the chemical elements recur at regular intervals).

Scerri describes how this modern definition came to be. In his narrative, he does not only discuss the scientific but also considers the historical and philosophical as well. Blending these three aspects makes for interesting reading especially for those who are not very familiar with the periodic table.

Before examining the periodic table, Scerri considers its main building blocks, the elements (those substances that cannot be separated into different substances; a pure substance like gold, silver, copper, carbon, aluminum, etc.) Then he takes a brief look at the modern periodic table and some of its variants. Having thus laid important thematic foundations and defined some essential terms he begins the story of the development of the modern periodic system that began with its birth in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, culminating with an entire chapter devoted to "the Russian genius" named Dimitri Mendeleev (1834 to 1907). (Mendeleev has an element named after him called mendelevium.)

After this, Scerri tells us how "physics invades the periodic table." That is, how atomic research, as well as other key discoveries in twentieth century physics influenced the understanding of the periodic table. In these sections, attention is paid to aspects of classical physics as well as quantum theory and quantum mechanics.

This book concludes with a discussion of the synthesis of elements beyond element 92 (uranium) and with a good discussion of alternative forms of the periodic table.

This book has over 40 illustrations with many of these illustrations being, not surprisingly, periodic tables.

When reading this book, I had an alphabetical list of the elements with their symbols, atomic weights (average weight of all the different types of an element), and atomic numbers handy. This was so I could follow Scerri's discussion closely, and thus get maximum value from this book. For example, the element uranium mentioned above has the symbol "U," atomic weight 238.03, and atomic number 92. (Note that you can read this book without such a list.)

The only problem I had with this book is that there is no picture of Mendeleev. Why? Scerri says that "the name of Mendeleev is inextricably linked with the periodic table in much the same way that evolution by natural selection and relativity theory are linked with Darwin and Einstein respectively."

Finally, there are two books I recommend after reading this one:

(1) "The Elements: a very short introduction" (2004)
(2) "The Periodic Table: its story and its significance" (2007)

In conclusion, Shakespeare tells us that "Brevity is the soul of wit." Dr. Scerri has shown us his wit by reducing the complicated story of the periodic table to a few pages!!

(Also, I think if he decides to form his own musical band, he should name it "The Scerriums.")

Another fine installment in the "A Very Short Introduction" Series

The last time I gave any focused attention to the periodic table was in high school chemistry, back in 1966. I vaguely remembered it as an aesthetically pleasing intellectual construct, so when I stumbled across this installment in Oxford University Press's "A Very Short Introduction" series, I decided to revisit it. I am glad I did.

Eric Scerri lectures in chemistry and the history and philosophy of science at UCLA. For a writer on scientific matters, he writes well and lucidly. The organization of THE PERIODIC TABLE is indicated by its chapters:
1. The elements
2. A quick overview of the modern periodic table
3. Atomic weight, triads, and Prout
4. Steps towards the periodic table
5. The Russian genius -- Mendeleev
6. Physics invades the periodic table
7. Electronic structure
8. Quantum mechanics
9. Modern alchemy: from missing elements to synthetic elements
10. Forms of the periodic table

Thus, the overall approach is an historical one -- from concepts involved in the periodic system, to precursors of the table, to the discovery of the periodic system by Mendeleev, to the prediction of new elements and the filling in of gaps in the periodic table, to the synthesis of elements beyond uranium, to contemporary alternative forms of the periodic table.

I don't remember Mendeleev from my high school chemistry class. Yet Scerri writes that "the name of Mendeleev is inextricably linked with the periodic table in much the same way that evolution by natural selection and relativity theory are linked with Darwin and Einstein respectively." Could it be that my high school chemistry course ignored Mendeleev because we were then near the height of the Cold War?

As probably need not be said, I am not a scientist. For someone like myself, THE PERIODIC TABLE: A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION gives sufficient background and it strikes the appropriate level of detail. In addition to the periodic table itself, I also learned about or was reminded of various matters or developments in chemistry and physics. Even for practicing chemists, the book may be worth reading because of its historical orientation and the occasional discussion of issues philosophical in nature.

A Classic!

Reigeluth's book was a classic when it was published and it still is. This is a very important book which brings together the very best known instructional theories of the 70's. It starts with "Instructional Design: What is it and why is it?" and continues with the models and theories of instructional design. I especially liked the theoretical framework presented in the book that serves as a 'schema' for interpreting, understanding, and evaluating instructional design theories. By doing that, this book highly contributes to the field of instructional design that is so distributed and diverse.
Every instructional designer should read this book to base their design on the theories presented in the book for effective and efficient instruction. I especially liked the way the book is organized so that it can even be used to teach instructional design to novice. Reigeluth even provides guidelines for it in the beginning of the book. I used it in my teaching and I received very positive feedback from my students. It is my belief that every instructional designer should have this one of a kind book.

This should be in every instructional designer's library.

This book provides a great overview of the theories and models that shaped the field of instructional design up through the 70's. It is a popular primer and reference guide for the field. Reigeluth provides a history and description of the field of instructional design. He then provides a theoretical framework for comparing instructional models and theories. In Unit II, the theories and models are introduced by Reigeluth, with biographical information about the theorists. The theories and models are usually described by the actual theorists. Reigeluth has written volume II of this book, which covers later theories and models. There was also a companion book, Instructional Theories in Action: Lessons Illustrating Selected Theories and Models, written in 1987, which demonstrates how the theories can be implemented to design courses. These books can be a little abstract for those new to the field. However, if you want a hands-on guide to design, also get Instructional Design Strategies and Tactics by Cynthia B. Leshin, Joellyn Pollock, and Charles M. Reigeluth.

If you're an instructional designer or curriculum developer buy this book - it will make you better at what you do! I purchased this book over 10 years ago and as my career as an Instructional Designer has progressed, it has turned out to be my most trusted source. No other book in my I.D. library is as dog-eared, annotated and worn. Even after nearly 20 years, the information in this book is still as relevant and useful as it was the day it first rolled off the press.
