This is a capable, if sometimes breathless, reconstruction of the rampage of Robert Hansen, the "most prolific serial rapist and murderer in Alaska's history," who killed more than 20 women in the 12 years before his conviction in 1984. Freelance journalist DuClos has recreated some scenes and dialogue, but has dug enough to find victims who escaped Hansen, to show how police and judges blundered in being lenient with Hansen (such as by not ensuring that he would receive psychotherapy and lithium treatment) and to describe Anchorage's tawdry tenderloin district, where Hansen stalked nude dancers. A native of Hansen's hometown, Pocahontas, Iowa, DuClos describes young Hansen as a stuttering loner with acute feelings of inadequacy--elements common to serial killers, according to FBI research cited here. Convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in 1972, Hansen was quickly furloughed, and while he held down a respectable job as a baker and won trophies for his hunting, he resumed his killing spree. He would kidnap women, take them to the wilderness (often in his plane), sometimes rape them, and stab or shoot them. After a victim who escaped Hansen identified him, police confronted him and he confessed, leading troopers on a macabre tour to identify wilderness gravesites. Hansen is now serving a life sentence in an Alaska prison.

Good early book on human hunter Robert Hansen

Good, yet older, book on Robert Hansen, Alaska's human hunting killer, who murdered over 20 women in the tundra from the 70's to 80's. The book is fairly well written & keeps your intrest, while at the same time remaining "human" to Hansen's victims (most of whom were prostitutes or strippers or both). As for "gory details", there isn't much, though i was disturbed at several of the killing descriptions. Overall a good true crime book on a bizzare serial killer, must have for criminology/killer/crime buffs.

The content of the book was pretty good. Sometimes choppy but overall a good read.
The format was simply awful... words run together, random hyphens, symbols inserted in the middle of words. Some sentences were cut off...I swear something was missing several times.

Adequate for the student of pharmacy

Well written and adequate for the student of pharmacy. However for this audience I would recommend Wilson and Gisvold's Textbook of Organic Medicinal and Pharmaceutical chemistry 11th Ed, because the figures and text are more complete providing a clearer more concise and rigorous treatment of the subject.

Buy it, Read it, Enjoy. You are welcome.

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not a science fiction kind of gal, but I really enjoy this author (go check out her Loki series I Bring the Fire Part I : Wolves (A Loki Series) - the first one is FREE!). So, I was game to read something outside of my norm. I'll admit, my default is to want some romantic tension without it being a I'm-going-to-beat-you-over-the-head kind of thing. The teaser for the book kind of hints at some romance, but I'll let you know: it's totally there, subtle and building and complex. It's a part of the plot without it being the all consuming focus - a writing style in which Gockel shines. Overall, a very well written and engaging read with a solid plot, diverse and compelling cast of characters, lots of heart, and NO CLIFFHANGER! (It's a trilogy, so obviously the overall plot isn't resolved, but the immediate story arc resolution leaves the reader eager but not frustrated waiting for the next book.)

H/h: Noa has dang near all the heart and James has dang near all the physical power which would make for a great team IF their priorities weren't in near constant conflict. James would like Noa to Not Die. And Noa? She wants to save her planet which ends up getting her shot at - a lot. Noa is a great heroine - clever and bold with enough human flaws to make her a 3 dimensional character. And she makes inappropriate jokes when she's in danger - which is often. Homegirl has to escape from a concentration camp, accept help from a dude who's a bit "off" but looks suspiciously like someone she used to know Really Well, AND try to save half the population of her planet from the other crazy half. NBD, you guys. James is a different sort of character. The reader isn't completely sure what is going on with him - and neither is James. This is a plot thread that gets teased into the light towards the end of the book, but won't resolve in this installment. His own personal situation meant I wasn't as able to connect with him as I was with Noa or other characters in the book, but this didn't detract from my engaging with the story. I will say, James really starts to come alive the further you get into the book.

Supporting Cast: The first half of the book is mostly Noa and James, so any comic relief comes from her banter. However, in the second half Gockel introduces some characters that had me laughing out loud. The fact that she named a sex-bot character 6T9 makes my left-of-center heart happy. Gockel demonstrated in her I Bring the Fire series that she has a talent for writing secondary characters with depth making the reader fall in love with (or have genuine hatred for) nearly everyone she trots into the spotlight. Archangel Down is no different and I can't wait to see more from them. One of these characters has autism (which is, personally, close to my heart) and the way this plays out in the story done so well - not in an easy, comic relief sort of way, but in a poignant and plot-driving way. Brilliant.

Setting: The world building is phenomenal. I didn't get bogged down with cumbersome info dumps; everything is revealed organically through the story. This, for me, made the fact that it was science fiction enjoyable instead of a burden. Gockel has some serious religious, racial, and political tones she is tackling, but nothing struck me as preachy or heavy-handed, just part of the atmosphere.

Style wise, if you like Lindsay Buroker's Emperor's Edge series, you'll like this.

Bottom line: This is a no-brainer. Buy it, read it, enjoy. And Share!

Failure Is Not An Option

This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to find out what is next for Noa&James in the next book!!!

Noa came home to visit her baby brother Kenji... Unfortunately she ended up in a concentration/forced work camp instead of spending quality time with her favorite sibling. She thought life was at its all time low when her husband was murdered. Too bad she was wrong. Knowing she must escape and rescue her brother is the only thing that keeps her going. Why has her homework devolved into Nazi like persecution and insane antitechnology religious zealotry? Why are they railing about heretics and demons as well as aliens? What caused this horrific mix of violence and genocide?

James woke on the planet with no clear idea of how he got there or what transpired before that. All he knows is he has a driving urge to find Noa and save her from those who would harm her. His past is fuzzy and unreal. Why does he feel an overwhelming desire to gain her trust? Why is he always seeing black whenever it seems like something will end her? Will they escape with their lives and sanity intact? Will they be able to find a way off planet to expose the atrocities of the camps?

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy a little first contact in their futuristic dystopian sci-fi fantasy action adventures with a dash of romance and a heavy serving of horror :)

SciFi With a Human Context

As usual author C. Gockel has managed to create an alternative reality without losing the ability to draw readers into the vital humanistic connection so many other SciFi authors lose in their blind rush to show technical savvy. All our identifying emotional characteristics, anger, fear, self-doubt, love, despair, and humor are on display as the colonists of a new world a forced to realize they are not alone in the Universe after all. I would have given 5 stars, it rates such for originality, if not for couple storyline jumps that had me backtracking to see what I might have missed -- understandable considering the diabolical plot twist built into this entertaining read. OK, 4.5 Stars

A real way to start a business in real estate

I originally thought this book was going to talk about flipping a home by buying it, fixing it up and reselling it. It actually doesn't talk about that at all, what it teaches you is even better. This book will teach you how to start a real estate business by wholesaling properties. You make a profit by essentially putting a deal together between a motivated seller and an investor who wants to fix the property up to resell it. It is probably the best way to get started in real estate. Once you get systems in place and are closing deals you can move onto keeping some properties to fix up and resell or fix up and rent. This book teaches you what you need to do in order to find the deals to make that happen.

I have followed Nick for quite some time now after seeing his story on Secret Entourage. After reading his blogs, following him on Instagram, and even having a personal call with him, I knew Nick was the real deal and sincerely cared about teaching people and helping them achieve their dreams of financial freedom. When Nick's book came out I wasted no time ordering it. Listen, all the other real estate books out there are TRASH! Yes, I said it. TRASH! They will not break down everything like Nick did step by step, word by word, scenario by scenario. Besides Nick focuses on one main topic that makes this all possible, ENTREPRENEURSHIP! Becoming a Real Estate Entrepreneur NOT investor!

This book right here is the single handily greatest blueprint I've ever read in my entire life to starting your own real estate business let alone business from the ground up with ZERO capital involved tackling every scenario you could possibly face along the way. Simple does NOT mean easy - but everything you need is right here

My family is in the construction business and a way we are trying to grow our business is to learn more about real estate, how to acquire it, buy it, sell it, flip it, etc. As there is a lot of material out there covering this topic, I've sifted through a load of different books websites and articles trying to learn the best way to get into this industry.

One thing I hate is seeing self proclaimed gurus making outlandish claims that their "strategy" or "secret" will get you ahead of the competition with little work or investment. I had to weed through a lot of it, but I finally found the Alpha Home Flipping website and ultimately this book. Nick makes it immediately clear that while his strategies are simple, that doesn't mean they're easy. It will take time and effort and resilience. Nothing of worth comes easy, and the real estate business is no exception.

This book covers everything from start to finish on how to land your first real estate deal. It's all in an easy to read and conversational (and sometimes funny) format that grabs you right away. It's not a slow pitch for another product, or a pipe dream strategy. This stuff works, but as the author has said, make sure you stay persistent and don't get frustrated immediately. All it takes is one!

At the same time, it raises questions about the implications of emigration for the fate of health care system in India.

The honest truth on a difficult issue.

A few of the reviews for this book are very negative and very biased. As a counselor looking for the truth to share with those who would like "a way out" of the homosexual lifestyle, this is a very helpful book. If you don't want to know God's views on the issue and you feel that homosexuality is an OK option, don't read this book. If you feel like there must be something more to life than living the homosexual lifestyle and you want to experience God's love and acceptance, this is the book for you.

"Desires in Conflict..." by Joe Dallas, is a manual for Christian men striving to be Godly while dealing with their homosexual temptations. The book deals with the topic honestly and sympathetically but remains grounded in scripture. I highly recommend the book to any man struggling with homosexuality, and to any minister who may be counseling such men.

This book was written for students in the social sciences (criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, and social work) who are beginning a criminal justice internship in a public or private agency. It will also be a useful reference for faculty and agency supervisors. The book focuses on many issues involved in the total internship experience, especially those related to students' personal and professional development during their internship education. A guide of this sort is important because many of my students have, over the past six years, considered their internship among the most influential experiences of their undergraduate careers. At the same time, they have reported that their regular course work provides only indirect, and generally insufficient, preparation for their initial real-world experiences. This book is designed to make the connection between academic course work and the knowledge, skills, and emotional challenges that are found in the professional world of work.

I have attempted to use the best information available from psychology, social work, and other disciplines that the interns will encounter in their various, placements. I conducted extensive literature reviews of the leading journals and textbooks in each discipline and consulted with several faculty and agency supervisors in various colleges and universities and internship placements.

Using my personal experience as an intern and my experience coordinating internship placements for hundreds of students, I designed this book to be used as an introductory text on internships that can also be a helpful resource tool for students in their work at the agencies. I hope this book will help readers have a more effective and rewarding work and learning experience.
