About the Author
Chris Peers has spent most of his life in the Birmingham area. He studied history at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and started writing for publication in 1990 with a series of Osprey Men-at-Arms titles on the armies of ancient China. In addition his writing, he has worked at various times in accountancy and in the archives of Birmingham Central Library, and is currently in the civil service. Chris has written books and magazine articles on many diverse aspects of history, ranging from China and medieval England to 19th-century Africa and World War I. His published works include: Warlords of China, 700 BC to AD 1662 (Arms and Armour Press), Soldiers of the Dragon (Osprey), Armies of Nineteenth Century East Africa and Armies of Nineteenth Century Central Africa (Foundry Books), and The African Wars - Warriors and Soldiers of the Colonial Campaigns and Offa and the Mercian Wars (Pen and Sword). If he has the opportunity, Chris' hobbies include walking, cycling, birdwatching, historical wargames, and travel, especially to Africa. The author lives in Sutton Coldfield, England.

Don't Waste Your Time!

Not sure who wrote all the favorable reviews (friends and family of the author?), but this is one extended promotional piece for a specific unit, which as it says on the cover, is called Magna Wave. Doesn't even scratch the surface of what PEMF is, but that it isn't meant to – it's purpose is to sell you a Magna Wave unit. As whether the unit works the way the book claims it does, well, your guess is as good as mine.

Lacks any how to's

A lot of background story telling with little scientific support (there's plenty for it) and practically no applicable information. Would have been so much better if Pat shared his best techniques on using the Magnawave instead of writing out an infomercial for it. -and yes, I know he does clinics, but hey, he wrote a book on PEMF, so shouldn't there be some how to's in it?

If you are looking for PEMF therapy this gives a good introduction to the subject. Although it may somehow sound like advertisement of their product, you can make your own research as I did and buy the one you think is right for your practice. Definitely the high power versions are the way to go when it comes to PEMF therapy although lower powered ones are more for home use.

There are not many choices of PEMF devices out there although I was surprised to find lot more than when I first started my research on this. So if you had tried physical therapy for months and months with little or no results, give this modality of non-invasive therapy a try. The best part, you will be spending not more than 10 minutes in your practitioner's office. By the way, not that it means much to me, Dr. Oz is on this bandwagon as well.

This is very clearly written, and contains links to the videos on the authors' website. The videos are very interesting, and helpful, especially with the technique for braiding a pierogi. The author also very helpfully answered a comment that I had about the website. (incorrectly linked video.) I haven't had the time to try out a recipe yet, although I have my eyes on several. I like that he tells you why something is done this way, and explains what can happen if you don't do it this way: rubbery pierogi.

The most sound business advice I've read or heard about in a long time!

In this book Mr. Oreck covers sound business practices that could be applied to ANY business. If you want to start a business or already run one and want more than general guidance with good down-to-earth no nonsense advice from numerous perspectives, look no further, all from a guy (David Oreck) that's been there and done it and looks down upon what some of the college courses preach.

What's Wrong with Corporate America?

There's a lack of common sense in Corporate America today. The grit and raw intelligence that made America great is being pushed aside by over-educated MBAs who believe they know how to do things better. This is not a hit against education, but a hit against those that abandon common sense for lines and figures on a spreadsheet. There was a time when leadership came from the bottom. It came from those who worked their way up from the "mail room." Now leadership is selected from those who are the loudest and most educated. If you don't believe this is an issue simply look at what many of the biggest corporations in America have done in the last decade.

Oreck founded a solid company and used common sense as well as experience to build a great company. Then he sold the company to a group that resembled what I described above. That group later bankrupted the company and sent it spiraling downward. Now Mr. Oreck wants to buy back the company he founded and make it great again. He wants to do this to preserve what he built and to save the jobs of hard working people.

This book is worth reading, especially now. Corporate America is hurting and this book has the answers as to why.

Easy Read and very practical advice from David Oreck (you know - the vaccume cleaner guy).

This was a lovely and insightful afternoon to read. The language David uses is clear and direct and his guidance is based purely on his own first hand experience living and prospering since the Second World War. He doesn't paint himself as a genius. Just an average guy with some sharp ideas about getting a business launched and keeping it on it's feet.

The elements and questions David raises may not be, in-an-of-themselves "sufficient" for running a successful business. In other words, you could do everything he talks about and still fail. Luck, inspiration, hard work -- all do play a part. However, David's observations are spot-on NECESSARY elements for success, meaning that if you DON'T pay attention to these details, your business is not likely to get off the ground. It's like saying there are prizes on top of some very tricky-to-climb mountains. If you have your gear, supplies, agreement with your team, weather reports, mad -- and if you're lucky and have a great guide or mentor -- you at least those have a chance of reaching the prize. More more planning and a bit of luck will definitely make the journey easier, but without those essentials, you would be unlikely make it more than a very short way up that mountain -- or you may just never try at all.

Personally, I am a big fan of mentors. Especially if they tell realistic stories of problems they have confronted in real life and can warn you away from boobey-traps! Mine has often told me that everybody learns from the school of hard knocks-but if you're lucky- you can learn from knocks which have or are hammering away at someone else!

Whether you are just starting out (or thinking about it) or a seasoned CEO of a Fortune 500 -- this book is well worth the time. Maybe if the CEO of Borders had internalized David's wisdom a couple of years ago, they might still be around!

Perfect Beach Read

Just finished this book and logged on to write a short review while it was fresh in my mind. I was shocked to see so many negative one and two star ratings. I will admit that The Vacationers is not great literature or in danger of winning a Pulitzer, but it's a perfectly good little novel and quite entertaining. I thought the characters were well defined and of varied enough interests to keep me guessing where it would go next. This was a group situation of family/friends spending two weeks together, albeit in paradise, still in a confined setting. We all know the little nuances, annoyances, and petty upsets that can arise in such circumstances, and I thought the author did a good job of conveying the emotions that each character experienced. I definitely came away with a feeling of the love/hate relationship which exists in all families, and in the end felt I knew the Post clan pretty well. The ultimate outcome was more or less what I expected but not what I would call predictable. I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it for anyone who wants a light, easy read, a little literary getaway so to speak. If you're taking a holiday to the beach this summer, this is the perfect book to pack.

My first beach read of 2014

It is hard to distinguish yourself as an author in the dysfunctional family arena. Authors have already taken me to a shiva, summer houses, weddings and funerals. This time a two week vacation in Mallorca, Spain becomes the backdrop, as we follow the ups and downs of the Post family and friends.

From the beginning, no one is particularly thrilled about this sojourn. Initially booked as a 35th wedding anniversary present, the Post marriage is now in flux. 60 year old Jim has recently been forced to resign as the editor of a New York Magazine for his dalliance with a 23 year old intern. His wife Fanny is a writer "going around the world and writing about what she ate" is deciding what her next course of action might be. Sylvia, their 18 year old daughter, is ready to begin Brown University in the fall and wants to lose her virginity. She is disheartened to see the fighting among her parents and has recently gone through her own angst due to her girl /boyfriend's duplicitous actions. 28 year old Bobby is a realtor and lives in Florida. He is a casualty of the real-estate bubble. He has been living with his girlfriend Carmen, who is 10 years older, for seven years without making a commitment. Carmen is an instructor at the Total Body Power and feels like an outsider, everything she does in order to please her boyfriend's family "never seemed to be right". Charles is Fanny's best friend and he and husband Lawrence have been trying to adopt a baby to complete their family.

Author Emma Straub appears to make all the right decisions. Instead of using alternating chapters with a lot of back-story, she jumps from character to character, as the book starts on Day One of the vacation and ends on Day Fourteen. This keeps the pace flowing as you are never bogged down with a story-line that is wearisome. Mallorca, in all its beauty, lends to the atmosphere that cries out "beach read".

This is a book filled with knowable characters whose relationships authentically capture the discord that is sometimes part of family life. While it must be challenging to come up with a new spin on dysfunctional families, these characters were well drawn and likeable and some of the observations in the book were spot on. Many of the characters do grow and learn from their mistakes and while the ending may be predictable, there is nothing wrong with a feel good conclusion. It you indulge in this genre of book, it is recommended.

"Friendships were tricky things, especially friendships as old as theirs was. Nudity was nothing more than a collection of hard-earned scars and marks. Love was a given, uncomplicated by sex or vows, but honesty was always waiting there, ready to capsize the steady boat".

This book started out with potential, but went nowhere. The characters were poorly developed and I found myself not caring about them at all. The "climax" was so anticlimactic and completely predictable in every aspect. Additionally, this book was set in place that the author didn't bother to describe at all.

Nov 06 This is a bind-up of all of the Giovanni Civardi books previously published by Search Press. As such, it's a substantial guide to drawing mostly figures and anatomy, but with a chapter on scenery thrown in. 376 pages for GBP20 is not bad value at all, although you might find that, as a paperback, it takes a bit of a battering, because this is more of a book to dip into than one to follow right through as a course. The author's style is perhaps a bit old-fashioned and you won't find anything startlingly new or avant-garde here, but, equally, you may not regard this is as a criticism, nor is it meant as such. Giovanni is nothing if not thorough and he explains things like perspective, shading, hatching, form and proportion with admirable clarity. Every page is filled with sensitive drawings, mostly in pencil, which you can copy or emulate. This is not really a completely complete guide to drawing and, if you want a more structured course, you're probably best off looking elsewhere. However, if your interests are mainly figurative, then you could pick up a lot of ideas and techniques from it. I would like to see him do a book on drawing people in street scenes. This is a subject many artists would like to see. There are so many artist who paint street scenes and would like to have people in them but don't because they fail to do it well enough so they are included in their paintings. I have discussed this issue with so many and have been told there are no good books on the subject. I could elaberate on the subject of the need for such a book but you get my point. Drawing Common people on the street is needed. It would be perfect if Giovanni Civardi did the book. He has a way of demonstration like few others. I would like to write to him but have been unable to find an address for him. Thank you for publishing some of the best books available in the market. Mastering Drawing Skills

Giovanni Civardi's knowledge and outstanding drawing skills make this a book that should be at the elbow of all that pick up a pencil, pen, crayon, charcoal or anything else, to make marks that really mean something. His skill and instruction takes the student and the more experienced along the path to mastery. Line, form, shape, tone and texture, etc are all developed throughout the book with a great quality of presentation and learning sequence. This is no ordinary book but a genuine "tour de force" which will have a reader/student acquiring skills for a lifetime.

Not a great guide to drawing

I cannot recommend buying this book. It is a compilation of drawings done by the author with incredibly little instruction. The drawings themselves are acceptable but certainly not incredible.

Maybe we're not so bad after all

Scott Turow wrote the introduction to this book. Turow is one of my favorite authors, and he's one of the few who writes both fiction and non-fiction (and keeps them separate, unlike Michael Moore and Dan Brown). Having read Turow books and having read his writings about how he changed his views on the death penalty, I trust Turow. Therefore, his name on this book made me want to read it.

This work is non-fiction, and it gives credence to the idea that "truth is stranger than fiction." Remember the bizarre OJ Simpson "trial?" I never did watch the television coverage, so I got all of my information after the melodrama had subsided. Of course, you'll find the OJ spectacle covered in this book.

Interestingly, I read this book in parallel with listening to a couple of audio books on the same subject (one by two detectives on the case, another by Marcia Clark).

This book left some impressions on me:

* Rich people can be terribly cheap and petty. You would think that, with millions or billions of dollars, a person would not be so concerned about getting more that he or she would go to great lengths to hurt others to get it. After all, don't we stop eating when full? But some people are just gluttons.

* People can tell the most brazen, stupid lies. While most of the crimes are in this book are heinous, the lies the perpetrators spin are almost humorously pathetic. Of course, we see this all the time with the American Taliban (not their official name), which has a 95% error rate in the notices it sends out to terrified taxpayers.

* Not everybody views people as people (again, we see this with the American Taliban).

* People who commit the most awful crimes most often follow those crimes with behavior that says, "Catch me!" OJ Simpson was a classic example. The Menendez brothers epitomized this.

Horrendous crimes are interesting because they say something about us as well as the criminals. What really separates us from horrendous criminals, and how can we maintain that separation?

The first thing you notice about this book is it looks like a magazine. It's the same size as three or four magazines stacked on top of each other, and it is as photo-centric as any good magazine.

The material in this book comes from the files of People Magazine, so the cases do not represent a cross section of America. They represent a cross section of People Magazine's coverage. And that coverage is primarily movie stars, notable eccentrics, and the ultra-rich.

I've read People Magazine, because you find it in waiting rooms everywhere. To me, it's eye candy and is of little value. I really don't care what various celebrities are doing. They live on a different planet with different rules, and most of them are just plain crazy. This book bears that out.

I was surprised to discover the book has less of a fluff factor than the magazine does. In fact, it's not fluff at all, but a serious treatment of the material. But all the vignettes are short enough that you never get bogged down in any particular story. And here's something you rarely hear from me: The writing is first-rate.

Will you feel uplifted after reading this book? Maybe--that depends on whether you reflect on your own situation and your own circle of friends and loved ones. Will you be more able to see through deception and you might be more aware of dangers around you? Probably.

You will certainly be aware that our "justice" system is far from perfect. But then, we're all imperfect. Whatever petty annoyances you "suffer" with your spouse or other important people in your life, it's good sometimes to put all of that in context. You read this book and you realize that those irritating habits of your friends and loved ones are not worth getting terribly flustered over.

And what about your own foibles? Unless you are future subject material for a book like this, you should take comfort in the fact that you are not as flawed as you may have thought. That's reason enough to get up and face the world each day, to take on it challenges and be satisfied that you have done about as well as anyone can expect you to. We can all strive to be better, but sometimes a look at the dark side of humanity's worst can help us realize that--even with all of our imperfections--we are not so bad after all. And neither are those to whom we express criticism, disappointment, or irritation.

After reading this book, I feel like telling various people I know how much I appreciate them after all. Sometimes contrast, as Martha Stewart (also a subject of this book) might say, is "a good thing."

A book revealing human interest stories which turn celebrity as America watches the investigations, indictments, and trials

People Weekly magazine has captured the last 30 years of true crime stories in magazine-style reporting that includes multi-page feature articles as well as sidebars and photo spreads. People, originally a feature in Time Magazine, has been consistently lauded for excellence in editing and circulation, and since 2001 has maintained a 50/50 ratio of celebrity coverage to human interest coverage. In many ways, true crime reporting represents the nexus of celebrity (albeit usually unintentional celebrity) and human interest news reporting.

The 144-page book opens with murder - cold-blooded, pre-meditated homicide, from Andrew Cunanan to Scott Peterson. Other opening chapters focus on unusual criminals, crimes of passion, crimes that are stranger than fiction, serial killers, and murderous con artists. The profile of female con artist Sante Kimes, leader of a mother-son team, is chillingly captivating. Strange high-profile crimes focus on the fraudulent billing of the agency that ran Miss Cleo psychic ads and the fertility doctor who sold a method of treating an infertile husband's sperm for re-insemination that was really the doctor's own sperm! Crimes that went in and out of the headlines over a matter of decades are also described in detail, as well as the unsolved mysteries and sudden twists of national true crime.

Of course, Hollywood celebrities do take up a few chapters, from "The Many Trials of O.J." to "The Fall and Fall of Michael Jackson" to "Martha in the Big House" and the more recent Phil Spector and Robert Blake murder indictments. Several pages are devoted to the guilty pleasure of celebrity mug shots. There is even an entire section devoted to analysis and critique of the made-for-TV movies based on the true crimes of the last few decades. This is a highly-recommended coffee table book for any subscriber of People or fan of true crime from the macabre to the bizarre.
