Review
"Fact-filled as this book is, with its myriad names, dates and book titles, the author never allows the reader to lose sight of the trends, tensions, and debates that shped the use of Roman law down through the centuries, ending with the civil codes of the modern European nation states. This is a welcome treatment and guide to its subject." The Classical Bulletin
"In Roman Law in European History, a master gives his readers both an introduction to the law of ancient Rome and an account of how that law lives on, well after the demise of the ancient society." David V. Snyder, H-Net Reviews
"...immensely useful and pleasurable reading.... The entire book will be welcome across many disciplines, but especially to historians and those interested in European culture and its reception of the classical tradition." Religious Studies Review

Short and Accurate.
By J. Fh
This book is very synthetic. A very good summary about Roman Law for someone that has little time and wants accurate information.
I don't recommend it if you are looking for a very detailed study of Roman Law.
On the other hand, if you already know a lot about it and want to read a short book that helps you organize many different ideas and that enables you to remember things that we naturally forget after time, this seems to be a great book.
If you don't know anything about Roman Law, it is also recommended. You can read this book in a day or two and gain a lot of vital information, in order to deepen your studies later. The author doesn't assume, in any moment during the book, that the reader already knows what he is explaining.

Great book
By Shira
The book is an excellent introduction and overview of Roman Law, expect lots of details and Latin terms. Perhaps not the best book for anyone with zero knowledge of Roman Law, but great for anyone with a bit of background. I found the book fascinating and learned a lot of the origins of law in European history.

Excellent summary of the role of Roman Law in European history
By E. Jaksetic
This scholarly book provides an informative summary of Roman law and how it played a role through European history, from ancient Rome to modern Europe. The book, written in a scholarly style, provides an excellent introduction to Roman law and its influence through European history. Readers looking for a thorough or in-depth analysis of Roman law and its influence on the development of European law probably would find this book not sufficient.
Because of the technical nature of the subject and the scholarly approach taken by the author, I would not recommend this book for readers with only a casual interest in the subject. But, I would recommend it as an excellent introduction to the subject for anyone interested in an historical perspective on Roman law or European legal history. Since modern legal systems based on a civil law approach (as opposed to legal systems based on the common law) were significantly influenced by concepts that arose from Roman law, this book might be worth reading by anyone interested in understanding the historical antecedents to modern legal systems based on a civil law approach.
Readers interested in this book should also consider taking a look at Hans Julius Wolff, Roman Law: An Historical Introduction.
