A very nice gift book.

First of all thanks Amazon, I pre ordered this and it came the day before the release date. I had no idea what to expect from this book, and I have a Lot of Stones books. This is pretty okay, a big sprawling coffee table size book , long on pictures , short on stories. As a gift book it is superb. If you have Stones books you have seen most of these these pictures before. I would rank it #3 in Stones Books. Rolling With The Stones, by Bill Wyman is the best Stones book there ever was, IMO. A giant book that takes weeks to read and is put together in a way that is nothing short of fantastic. Go buy that book. Next I would say is According to the Rolling Stones. Another oversize book- forget the tiny paperback version. That too has great insight from the band itself. And in a distant third , I would say this book. If you don't want to spend the $37+ dollars fear not. I bet this book is way less than that at B&N by Xmas.

Just OK.

This is from a devoted Stones fan for the past 40+ yrs. I've read numerous books and have followed their careers pretty closely. First saw them live in 72 at the Fabulous Forum in LA. Wow, they knocked my socks off. Anyway, I was anxious for the arrival of this book. Being that it was endorsed and authored by the RS, plus the 50 years, I thought I was in for a treat. Well, after receiving the book and browsing through it (you can only browse because it's all pictures) I was disappointed. Most of the pictures have been published in other books. There's nothing revealing in the captions for the pictures. Plus, I don't think enough pics or credit were given to Andrew Loog Oldham (who really molded and created the 'image' of the Stones) or Ian Stewart (the second member of the group after Brian). Plus, plus Mick Taylor doesn't get that much either. Being a diehard RS fan there was no way I would not get this book. If you are a diehard, then Yes you must get it. If you are a fan and just want a good book on the RS. Then here is my ranking of Stones books.
1. Rolling with the Stones - Bill Wyman - this is by far the best book.
2. Old Gods Almost Dead - Stephen Davis - Great details about early concerts. Life of the road. Good history.
3. Up and Down with the RS - Tony Sanchez - Great stories of late 60's early 70's life in the RS bubble. May have some embellishment for dramatic flair.

The Rolling Stones 50 is the most complete collection of memories I have ever seen. The photos, many of them i have never seen, are crisp and clear as if they were taken yesterday. If you are a Rolling Stones fan, this book is a MUST-HAVE!

Excellent Mix of Theory and Practical Information

As a longtime writer and educator, I came across Thomas Vogel’s book while seeking a primer about the underlying tenets that govern creativity. I appreciate theory but I was also looking for a practical guide that would give me insights into what makes creativity work and how to maximize in others. I found this book to be extremely useful --still research based without clobbering me with data. His theory that creativity is worth discovering and identifying in every person is beautifully rendered. And the cost of failing to do so is clearly high. The other huge takeaway is how Vogel shows that creativity grows from “practice” with excellent instruction on ways to integrate it into a busy life. Vogel writes clearly and well. I wasn’t surprised that he is a professor at Emerson where he must have honed his ideas and advice to a sharp edge. I’ve utilized his writing to launch an arts program for at-risk teens. Our results have been outstanding. Vogel deserves a chunk of credit.

Breakthrough Thinking is one of the most important books I now require my advertising students to read. It opens the mind and allows the students to foster their own creativity in a variety of different ways that may have been shut off since childhood. Before using this book for my courses the students would tell me they are not creative and have no way to become creative. I now have students that read this book front to back before I have even assigned chapters. I see students discover opportunities in the field of creative advertising after having read this book. Overall, this is a book that I think advertising educators have been waiting to place in the hands of their students. Hats off to Mr. Vogel for writing one of the most important books in the education of creative awakening.

Excellent Guide for Colored Pencils

This book is an excellent resource for colored pencil painting. It covers all the basics of colored pencil use but then focuses on specific issues one may encounter when painting with this medium. For example, how to use colored pencils on a dark surface, how to paint a variety of different glass objects and how to paint shiny metals. It is a good reference for painting still-life objects -- fruit, flowers, cloth, glass, metal and more. The authors' work is highlighted throughout the book and serves as examples of what you can accomplish with colored pencils. The book also includes several step-by-step projects which are easy to follow.

Excellent, But Be Aware

This is an excellent book. The book succeeds in what it sets out to do, provide tips, techniques and solutions to problems. I have made art for years, airbrush and painting, mostly. I have merely dabbled with color pencil but am now seeking to expand my knowledge of the medium in order to use it more in what I currently do. Therefore,I found the information in this book to be very useful and helpful. It is definitely worth adding to your reference bookshelf. However, be aware, as some of the other reviews have pointed out, the authors of this book only present one style of work. If you are looking for a variety of styles you may be disappointed. However, do not let that turn you off to this book. My work tends to be wild life pictures or fantasy art with dragons, etc., nothing like the style the authors present in this book. But I still highly recommend it because the information provided in this book can be applied to just about any style. The book provides fantastic information. It is up to you to use the information you find to be helpful and adapt it to your style. And I have found that almost everything presented in this book I can use.

This whole series is excellent ! These are truly some of the best books Iv ever read and would buy the whole series (even though Iv already read them) if they weren't priced so high for an ebook. Most books like this are around 3.99-5.99 which is do - able . I think you would sell a lot more if you put these on sale and added more attention to the covers.

Aside from the marketing details, the stories themselves are so very good! You have always been and continue to be one of my favorite authors.

Shifting the Color Line explores the historical and political roots of enduring racial conflict in American welfare policy, beginning with the New Deal.

Through Social Security and other social insurance programs, white workers were successfully integrated into a strong national welfare state. At the same time, African-Americans--then as now disproportionately poor--were relegated to the margins of the welfare state, through decentralized, often racist, public assistance programs.

Over the next generation, these institutional differences had fateful consequences for African-Americans and their integration into American politics. Owing to its strong national structure, Social Security quickly became the closest thing we have to a universal, color-blind social program. On the other hand, public assistance--especially Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC)--continued to treat African-Americans badly, while remaining politically weak and institutionally decentralized.

Racial distinctions were thus built into the very structure of the American welfare state. By keeping poor blacks at arm's length while embracing white workers, national welfare policy helped to construct the contemporary political divisions--middle-class versus poor, suburb versus city, and white versus black--that define the urban underclass.

Excellent Book

This is a superb book, one that makes important contributions to the study of race, politics, and the welfare state. I'm not surprised that, per the other review, graduate students had no trouble tearing this fine work down, since many graduate students seem to feel that is the point of a seminar. But scholars in this area recognize the significance of this work, it is very well-cited and deserves to be.

Academic embarassment

Lieberman's Shifting the Color Line is a failure in academic writing. His thesis - that federal agencies are capable of running racism-free welfare - is not only unsupported by his evidence, his evidence is itself racist in the exclusion of all other races besides white and black. Lieberman also fails to look at any sort of evidence from anywhere in the country west of the Mississippi, so the experiences of racial minorities in the midwest, southwest, and northwest are entirely left out of this monograph.

The blind infatuation with federal policy also ignores the blatant racism present in national politics in the period Lieberman studies in this work. In short, I've seen this book torn down within half an hour by a small seminar of graduate students. Any serious academic would do well to pass on reading this book.

Excellent book

I could not put this book down. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the author's experiences as a pilot in Vietnam, and his respectable decision to stop flying following his service in the war. This book contains one exceptionally remarkable section in which the author ties his experience to Einstein's Theory of Relativity and the facts about time which that theory offers. Real life examples which relate to complex scientific theories always provide interesting insight to the nature of humanity. All in all, this book serves as an interesting lesson about not only Vietnam, but also the implications war has on humanity.

Pucker Factor ten-thousand

As a Vietnam Infantry veteran, I have always held the chopper pilots in the highest regard for always being there when needed. Without them, we would not have survived. I had jumped from choppers into hot LZ's, finding the deepest depression or fattest tree for protection before returning fire - pucker factor ten-thousand! These pilots were relentless and continued to ferry and land reinforcements with not much protection for themselves. They flew their machines through steady streams of gunfire, and yet,they continued as if they were invincible. Dust off's, ash and trash runs, troop deployments and evacuations and over-head support were all part of their everyday job.

Mr Joyce does a wonderful job with this well-told story and offers the reader an in-depth look at the everyday life of these flying warriors, which isn't, by the way, a nine to five job. The book follows Mr. Joyce from the first day he volunteers to fly planes in college, through his fixed wing flight training and later reassignment to a helicopter squadron, and then during his tour in Vietnam. The author also has a fantastic sense of humor that sometimes catches you off-guard and will make you laugh out loud. After reading Pucker Factor 10, I have bumped up these pilots a couple of notches on my high esteem list. I also have a much better understanding of what these sky warriors had to endure in order to survive...sadly, many did not!

You gotta be joking!!!

It was a fair read until the author's story of he and his friends showing up at the airport, with beer, renting an aircraft and drinking said beer in flight.
The author's comment about drinking and driving being illegal, but drinking and flying NOT being illegal, is totally INCORRECT. On top of that, I know of NO self respecting aircraft operator who would rent an aircraft, a second time, to someone who, dropped empty beer cans on the ramp at the conclusion of his first rental flight!! This totally negated ANY credibility as to the veracity of the author. By the way, the Cessna 172 does not have a "choke". At least the author admitts he has no business flying an airplane.

Good vignettes but lacks cohesion

The stories were good but I got confused at times with the flow of the book. Most of the chapters had a year included in the chapter title but at times it seem to add to the confusion of the flow of the book. Also, there were incidents that were given a whole chapter and then are never referred to again. For example, early in the book Magnus, a main character, was severely wounded on a botched trading voyage but we never hear about the wound or his recover again. The individual vignettes are well written and interesting but there is no cohesion to the book

Very Good Historical-Fiction. Call of the Wolf Will be a Big Hit, Worthy of my Time & Money..

Length: Print, 322 pages; Audible, not available in audiobook format, but I would love to listen to an author narrated version.

This Historical-Fiction novel of is the first in a series. I liked the plot but would have wanted to better identify with the characters. Doing this is best accomplished through showing me what makes them think or act in the way they do. The author comes close at times, but alas, tells us what they feel, rather than shows us.

Language: Straightforward English absent of any foul language.

Dialogue: rings true to character and setting.

To demonstrate this writer's style and the pace of his writing, I have included an excerpt taken from near the mid-point of his novel.

EXCERPT

"You will not amount to anything," she would tell him. "Your father died protecting us from those animals and all you can do is follow them into the woods." It was a fascination she couldn't understand. These magnificent animals acted on instinct and the bidding of their master Fenrir. How could he blame them for what was not their choice? Yes, he had become their predator, but what was once done in anger was now an act of honor. His wife was from an honorable family, but not one with many resources. Vargr's mother had planned their marriage in honor of his father's wishes. He had made arrangements with her clan when they were young and, like the wolves, they had little choice in the matter. She was a fine woman, taller than most other women in the village, and not unattractive. She wore her hair braided and rolled up in a bun, which accentuated her full cheeks, and she could laugh. He would tell her stories and the house would fill with her voice; he loved that about her. However, like his mother, she was not happy about his wanderings.

"Don't you love me?" she queried.

"You know I do, why do you always ask?" he would respond.

"Because you are always gone into the woods. Other men leave their wives for the sea, but you leave..."

Bottom Line:

Call of the Wolf is a good, even a very good novel, even if the writing falls a bit short in description and character development. I rate it at a solid four stars. Reading it does give me a feel for Viking history.

So, I will definitely read the next book in the series for certain.

Amazing read

Call of the Wolf left me breathless. It's not often I read stories that are Christian influenced, I found this one quite fascinating. The details of Tue history of Viking culture were quite good and well written. Dr. Paul W. Perkins obviously did in depth research, and it shows.
He included several prayers by the Vikings, and included funeral rites. The story pulled me in and dismantle me go. I read the entire story in a day, staying up quite late and getting up early to finish it. I couldn't wait to read more!
I will be buying the next book and hoping for even more.
Thank you, Dr. Perkins, for showing many sides to Viking culture as well as their belief systems without bias.

At my age, my memory is a little bit fading which makes me worry. It’s a good thing that I downloaded this book because it provides very useful tips and recommendations on how to boost our memory retention. I personally like the fuel food section which made me want to buy those foods instantly. This book is worth my money and time. Having this is very useful in my every day routine. Thanks!
