About the Author
Daniel Bray is Lecturer in International Relations at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. His main research and teaching expertise is in international ethics, globalisation, democratic theory, and environmental politics. His current research specifically focuses on cosmopolitan approaches to international relations and pragmatist democratic theory.
Steven Slaughter is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia.

The author is writing for a British audience, so it is difficult at times to follow the expressions. But, the book did what I wanted it to do, filled in the details of the the various administrative and parliamentary struggles of the colonial powers as they were forced to cut loose the colonies that had made up their early twentieth century empires. The brutality of colonization is not excused nor neglected, the intransigence of the settlers of the several metropoles complicating the procedures is now clearer to me. The French experience in North Africa was excruciating for France and even more brutal for the non settlers -- the natives and rightful owners of the lands. It reverberates still.
